We had to go the bookstore today to pick up a couple of books I need for this week’s lesson. Duke had some funds he earned by making it to the Honor Roll once again. He was saving it for a video game, but at the bookstore he was mesmerized by a build-your-own-remote-control kit (this one to be exact). On the way home he read the instructions and bought batteries. As soon as we got home he sat at the table and began working on it. About an hour later he got up; programmed it to work on his TV and it actually worked!! not that it actually surprises me, but it makes me immensely proud :-)

He got it on the first try, which was great because it eliminated the frustration that usually comes with light painting.

Several street vendors in Washington Heights and the Bronx sell it by the cup, but I like to wait until Viernes Santo to eat my mom's habichuelas....They're the best :-)

Part of me wanted to press the button, see if it worked and then run, but I kinda have to give Duke a good example :-). Working or not I love its presence in my neighborhood.

IRT Subway 191st Street Tunnel in Washington Heights. This tunnel brings me memories of my high school days. It is about 1/2 mile long and creepy as hell. At the time I took this picture there was a good flow of people passing through it, so it wasn't too bad. The graffiti was pretty mediocre, it reminded me of a middle school bathroom, with gossip and insults. Overall the tunnel is still impressive, especially because it leads to the deepest station in the NYC subway system: 191st Street on the (1) line (almost 100 feet below the street).

I used photoshop on this picture, even though I am generally reluctant to edit my pictures. I used a water paper filter and I kinda like it.

This is the face of unjustified bedtime hunger. It's 9:17PM, we are getting ready for bed when I hear that dreaded phrase come out of Duke's mouth: "Mom, I'm hungry" There's not much in the fridge to fix anything in less than 10 minutes, so we have to go to the bodega. He buys half of the snacks in the store and tries to rationalize that he has a reason to be hungry even though he had dinner and snack.

This was the site of a deadly fire that took the lives of 10 people (9 of them children) a year ago. The fathers of the children killed were present as well as local residents, children from local schools, firefighters, and community leaders... and of course NY1 and channel 7. My job is a five minute walk away so I decided to go during lunchtime.

Day 84 (365).....A Day in The Life

This is the collage of the pictures I took in the 24 hour period of Feb 29, 2008. I was inspired by the sh1ft.org project A Day in the Life ... I took a picture roughly every hour celebrating the extra day the leap year brings us.

Here's a link to the set I had a lot of fun doing this project ...enjoy!

My school had a drum show today as part of a series of events celebrating Black History Month. I loved this particular part of the show because it involved a good amount of the students chosen from the audience on the spot. The man on the left guided them in playing several beats while the whole audience sang, danced and clapped to the same rhythm. Ironically, shortly after I witnessed two upsetting incidents involving students that seemed to have been repeated verbatim from a parent or other adult in their life. I came to the conclusion that ignorance is a terrible sickness with no hope for a cure any time soon.
